Abstract
Exosomes are the smallest extracellular vesicles (50~80 nanometers in diameter) produced from all know forms of cells, including bacterial, animal and plant cells. Carrying originating cell-specific biological molecules, such as peptide, metabolites and nucleic acis, exosomes function as a signal transducer, even crossing the blood brain barrier. We specialize in the utilization of exosomes from plant, especially edible plants such as fruits and vegetables. They have the distinctive advantage in the industrial scale production and the safety in human use, since plant-derived exosomes are not known to induce immune response in human compared with the exosomes from other sources. We show that plant-derived exosomes can panatrate skin cells without the use of extra energey sources, exert anti-oxidant capabilities, suppresses the expression of collagen-destroying matirx metallopeptidases (MMPs), which is responsible for the skin wrinkle formation. The most common skin problems in United Arab Emirates are known to be acne, itchy and blistered skin, dry skin and Rosacea. The common cause for these symptoms include sunburn and the ensuing inflammation. Our plant exosomes show strong anti-inflammatory activities in in vitro skin cells, suppressing the expression of Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-?) and Interleukin 6 (IL6). Most importantly, plant exosomes can not only prevent ultraviolet B (UVB)-mediated skin cell line, but also regenrate already damaged skin cells by UVB. The safety and efficacy of our plant-derived exosomes have also been validated in human skin test. There are of course excellent pharceutical drugs for various skin symptoms. However, our plant-derived exosomes can provide daily support in the form of novel cosmeceuticals. We also report the significant development in the drug delivery potential of plant-derived exosomes.
