Title: Eficacy of the shock waves or iontophoresis in calcified tendinitis of the supraspinatus

Introduction. The painful shoulder is the first cause of consult in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Methods. An experimental study was carried out in 82 patients, with both sexes, with diagnosis of calcified tendinitis of the supraspinatus, attended in the Rehabilitation Service of the Search Medical Surgical Center, in the period from January 2016 to January 2018. Forces divided into two groups, one experimental treatise with shock waves and another control, calcified tendinitis of the supraspinatus (iontophoresis with 2% acetic acid). All were evaluated before and after treatment by constant scaling, analogic visual scale, radiography and ultrasound. Contrast hypotheses and Pearson correlation were performed.

Results. In the control group, the female sex predominated (63,4 %). In both groups, patients aged 40-59 years prevailed (53,7 % experimental group and 51,2 % control group). The main antecedents were: physical exertion or overuse (54,9 %) and the traumas (23,2 %) similar in both groups. Before treatment both groups started with intense pain (7,9 ± 1,8 points control group and 8,.2 ± 1,2 experimental), poor functional status (42,9 ± 32,1 points control group and 31,9 ± 22,4 experimental), presence medium calcifications, (8,9 ± 7,2 mm group control and 6,5 ± 4,2 mm experimental), at the end of the treatment both groups have similar results, with a higher discretion for the group that received the treatment with iontophoresis (80,5 %).

Conclusions. Both treatments were effective for calcified shoulder injuries.
